The Soccer teams play well over Holiday Weekend The Men’s and Women’s Soccer programs are learning to adapt to adversity during the first week of their seasons. The Men’s team played two games over the weekend and posted a 1-1 record and the women’s team went 0-1. Friday night the men faced off against Bellarmine University, a NCAA Division II program, and turned in a 2-0 loss. Spalding’s goalkeeper played very well saving 22 of 24 shots on goal. He kept the Golden Eagles in the game even though they did not create much offense. “We made strides as a team,” Head Coach Kevin Cromwell states, “Bellarmine has a very solid and quick soccer team. We learned a lot as a program and we will bounce back soon enough.” The Golden Eagles did just that Sunday against St. Catherine College posting a 2-1 victory moving their record to 2-1. Spalding dominated the majority of the game, but only had 2 goals to show for it. The scoring started 8 minutes into the game when Drew Kapfhammer put a shot into the back of the net. Wes Miller scored another soon after moving the game to 2-0. St. Catherine scored their first and only goal at the end of the first half. Spalding held on to the lead in the second half with many scoring chances including a penalty shot in the 75th minute. St. Catherine’s goalie made a tremendous save keeping the game within reach. The game ended with the Golden Eagles on top 2-1. On Sunday the women’s soccer program also played St. Catherine College, but came up a little short losing 3-1. Amanda Trombley had the lone goal for the Golden Eagles and Beth Lawrey had the assist. “Our girls are playing well and are extremely competitive,” coach Cromwell notes. “We definitely have things to improve and we will work hard to make sure that it does happen.” |
