Second Half Shoots Down the Golden Eagles

After a 12 day layoff and the team fighting some injuries and sickness, the Spalding Women’s Basketball team once again hit the road to take on an opponent. You couldn’t ask for much more going into halftime of last night’s women’s game at St. Mary of the Woods College as the Golden Eagles took a 35-28 lead into the break. The team was controlling the boards outrebounding St. Mary of the Woods by 6. The Golden Eagles only shot 30% from the field but were getting good looks and not getting their shots to fall. All in all, it was a good first half for the team.

Then the second half came. While Spalding’ shooting got better so did St. Mary of the Woods; in a big way. In the first half the Pomeroys shot only 28% on 8-28 from the field. That number dramatically improved as they went 19-35 for an astounding 54% in the second half which led to 47 second half points, the most given up by Spalding all year. “You cannot give up that many points in a half,” Coach Just asserted. “They were getting good looks and their shots were falling but you cannot give up that many points in a half.” The game went back and forth until the end but it was St. Mary of the Woods that came away with the 75-71 victory.

Jackie Skaggs led all players with 21 points as Kelley Harrod led all players with 16 rebounds, 10 of which came on the offensive glass. Shontel Bates pitched in nicely with 11 points and Tesha Wright went 5-10 and put in 10 points on the night. The team travels to Franklin College this weekend and will take on Wartburg College out of Waverly, IA in the opening round of the tournament.
