Basketball Team Takes Advantage of Break

It will be 12 full days in between games in which our women’s basketball team has competed. Some coaches believe that this can be a momentum killer in a season while others believe it is the exact medicine the team needs. Coach Just looked at it from both angles as he saw his team go into last Sunday’s game against Fontbonne University winning 3 out of 4 games. A tough 65-59 loss on the road did not change coach’s mind on the time off. “It was actually something we were looking forward to” Coach commented. “We had such a flurry of games early on in the season that we did not have a lot of time to get in the gym and practice. This past week and a half we have been able to concentrate on skill stuff and get better at basketball.”

The team travels this week to St. Mary of the Woods who currently is playing their best basketball of the year winning the last 2 out of 3 games. Spalding is about to compete in their seventh away game while only playing one at home. A stretch like that could halt the progress of the team in the early season but Coach Just is not worried about that prospect. “Whenever you go on the road, it’s tough; however, playing this many early will make us a better basketball team in the end.”

This USCAA poll came out today and the Spalding Golden Eagles stayed put in the lastest rankings securing the #4 spot in the nation. Once again, Penn State Beaver holds on to the #1 spot for the third consecutive week.

The Golden Eagles travel to St. Mary of the Woods this Thursday and then once again hit the road for a tournament at Franklin College this Saturday and Sunday. They will finally come home after the first of the year as they take on conference rival Webster University on January 2nd.
