Women Get Conference Win, Men Suffer a Loss The Spalding University Golden Eagles Women’s Basketball Team was able to earn another conference victory at Greenville College on Saturday, January 30. The Golden Eagles were able to defeat Greenville in convincing fashion with a 27 point win. The final score was Spalding 71 Greenville 44. The story of the game was Spalding’s defense. The Golden Eagles were able to keep all of Greenville’s players from reaching double digit scoring. Head Women’s Coach Charlie Just said, “When you are able to hold any of your opponents to only 44 points, you are going to have a good chance at winning the game. We played great defense, and we were able to make some shots and come away with a victory.” Kayla Thompson, a freshman guard for Spalding, was the game’s leading scorer. She finished the game with 20 points and 4 steals. A majority of Thompson’s scoring came at the free-throw line where she made 9 of 12. With the victory, Spalding moves to 11-9 on the season and 7-4 in the conference where they currently sit at 4th place. Saturday was Spalding’s last game of a 4 game road stretch. The Golden Eagles split the 4 games, going 2-2. Spalding’s next game will be played at home on Saturday, February 6 in the Derek Smith Gymnasium. The Spalding University Golden Eagles Men’s Basketball Team was not as fortunate as the women’s. The team fell to Greenville College by 12 points, the final score being Spalding 60 Greenville 72. The Golden Eagles are now 8-12 and 5-6 in conference play. Spalding was only able to pull off 1 victory during their road stretch.
