Women’s Basketball Suffers Tough Road Loss

The Spalding Women’s Basketball Team took on the Fontbonne Griffins over the past weekend and fell just a little short.  The Griffins finished second in the SLIAC during the 2008-2009 season and Coach Just knew it was going to be a tough one especially on the road.  Fontbonne came into the contest with a 2-3 record overall and 0-1 in the SLIAC and the Golden Eagles entered with a 3-3 record and 1-0 in conference.  Turnovers plagued Spalding and they could not overcome their mistakes by the end of the game.

The first half went back and forth and the half ended with Fontbonne leading 28-27. “If we went into halftime within a few points I thought we would have a good shot at winning the game,” coach Just stated.

During the second half the tides shifted into the Griffins favor.  Turnovers killed the Golden Eagles, totaling 30 by the end of the game.   “We went on the road and played a good team,” Just added, “we did not play a great game and still kept it close.  That is a good sign for our team.”  The Golden Eagles ended the game shooting only 3 for 11 from behind the arc.  Fontbonne took the victory 65-59.

Jackie Skaggs led the Golden Eagles with 20 points and 5 total rebounds.  Amber Conniff was close behind with 19 points and 4 boards.

Spalding is back at it on the road next Thursday December 17th against St. Mary of the Woods.  Game time is 7:00pm.
