Golden Eagles Win 4th Game in a Row

The Spalding Golden Eagles Women’s basketball team was able to win their 4th game in a row on Saturday, defeating Blackburn College 57-41.  With this victory, Spalding moves to 5-2 in the SLIAC and 8-7 overall.

The big story of the game against Blackburn was the play of Kelly Harrod.  Harrod was almost able to put up a triple-double against Blackburn but she finished 3 assists short.  Kelly ended up with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists.  There was also solid play from Lauren Reed and Laquisha Boyd who both finished with 10 points.

The story of the first half was Spalding’s defense.   The Golden Eagles were able to hold their opponent to only 23% shooting from the field.  Lauren Reed’s eight points helped Spalding to an eleven point lead at halftime with the score being 32-21.

The second half started with Blackburn going on a 7-1 run.  They were able to get the Spalding lead down to 5 but that was as close as they would get.  Spalding started to play better defense, and they were able to hit some shots.  With 10 minutes left in the half, Spalding was up by 12 with the score being 46-34.  Spalding was able to add to their lead late in the game and ended up winning by 16 points with the final score being 57-41.

The Golden Eagles’ next game will be played on Tuesday, January 19 at home.  They face St. Mary of the Woods to end their home stretch.  The Golden Eagles also play Saturday, January 23 at MacMurray.
