Men’s Soccer with an Upset Early
Last night may have been the season opener for the Men’s Soccer Team but they looked like they were in mid-season form already. Taking a 1-0 lead into the late minutes of the game, the soccer coaches, the players, and the fans sat on the edge of their seats waiting for the final seconds to tick away. “We were really sweating it out at the end,” Assistant Coach John Pedro said, “we had played well all game and we were just trying to get it through to the end.” And indeed they did. The team held that score where it was and went on to an early upset, winning 1-0.
The lone goal of the game was scored by Will Van Nostrand and the assist went to Drew Kapfhammer. Much of the credit goes to the work ethic that the team has portrayed in practice. Early on in the pre-season the coaches commented how well the team was gelling and that they could see something in this group different then past groups. That all came to fruition when the final second ticked off the clock. “That was a big win for this program, and a big win for the University,” newly appointed Head Coach, Kevin Cromwell stated, “now we are going to get ready for Friday.”
The Men’s team will take the short journey to Bellarmine University to take on the Knights at 6:30 pm. While the season is still young, Coach Cromwell knows this can be a great turning point in the season and he looks for the fans and Spalding supporters to come and support the Golden Eagles. |
