Women keep Battling, Men Move to 4-1
Playing with only 10 players (a full fielded team would have 11 players), the women’s soccer team went into half time with high spirits only being down to Mount St. Joseph 2-0. “These women are amazing.” Coach Cromwell says. “No matter what kind of obstacle or adversity thrown their way they manage to take it head on. Not a lot of things have gone our way yet between injuries and sickness but you wouldn’t know it by just looking at this team, they are pretty special.” The team ended up losing the game 0-7, finishing the game with only 9 on the field but it sure showed a lot to their character and determination. They have found ways to overcome what has been thrown at them thus far and when asked about it the response was “We are just looking forward to our next game.”
The Men’s team continues to play well as they came into this game with a 3-1 record. The first half started slowly for the Golden Eagles as they gave up an early goal and found themselves trailing 1-0 at halftime. Coming out of the half it looked like the Golden Eagles suited up a whole new team. With a reenergized, refocused group of men, they quickly tied the game up at 1-1 only 3 minutes into the second half. When asked what was said at half Coach Cromwell stated, “I told the guys that we were creating chances with no scores, sometimes that happens. I knew the other team wouldn’t mind winning this game 1-0 so I challenged the guys to put the pressure on them and they sure stepped up.
And stepped up they did. After Wes Miller tied the game at 1-1, Chris Kittleson, off a thrown in, ran the length of the field and score to give the Golden Eagles the lead which turned out to be the game winning goal. The men move to 4-1 on the season but that is not stopping the coaches from continuing to improve in practice. “We have great depth to this team, we have great team speed, but we are really going to start to focus on endurance, which is what we are lacking.”
The Men will be traveling to Georgetown College this coming Friday and then will take on Rose Hulman Institute on Sunday. These two games prelude their conference play which opens up at home against MacMurray College on September 26th. |
