Men’s XC Team Greatly Improves with Incoming Transfer Head Cross Country Coach, Kevin Alessandro announced today the signing of transfer runner, Jonathan Pernell. Pernell comes to Spalding after spending one semester at Campbellsville University where he competed in the fall and ran a 28:09 8 kilometers at the Southeastern Classic in Louisville, KY. However, this is not the first time Coach Alessandro saw Pernell. “Jonathan is a guy that came to Spalding on a visit when he was in high school” Alessandro comments. “We obviously made an impression on him as a University and we are glad he decided to come here.” The story within the story is that there will be a reuniting of sorts on the cross country team. Alessandro’s two best runners, Alec Zaremba and JJ Depasco just so happen to be the high school teammate of Jonathan Pernell. They competed together at Shelby County HS and now look to bring much of that success here to the college level. “They had a tremendous high school team” stated Alessandro, “it’s nice to have these three guys back together again.” Pernell will be able to compete with the team when they begin their training next semester and start to compete in meets. The idea of adding Pernell to the team excited the Head Coach, but not just because of his talents in running. “In addition to being a great athlete, he is an excellent student. He is the type of person we are looking for here at Spalding. I am excited to have him on the team for those reasons as well as bringing needed depth to our top five.”
