Men’s Hoops Drops Two Games on the Road

After an impressive opening night win in which the Men’s Basketball team walked away with a 60 point win, they played this weekend in a tournament hosted by Mount St. Joseph. Game one saw the Spalding Golden Eagles face off with Wilmington College (1-1) out of Ohio. A first half surge by Wilmington left the Golden Eagles down by 10 going into half and were never able to cut the lead from there. They went on to lose the game by a score of 78-52.

Spalding struggled from the field only shooting 35% for the game and only 28% from behind the arc. They also struggled taking care of the ball as they recorded 25 turnovers and only 10 assists. The leading scorer for the Golden Eagles was freshmen, Jamertius Brasher who put in 13 on the day including going 5-9 from the field and 3-3 from the charity stripe. Brasher also led the team in rebounds with 8 while big man, Karlos Thompson picked 5 off the glass.

In game two of the tournament, Spalding squared off against Muskingum College (3-1). Once again the Golden Eagles saw themselves going into half down by double digits. However, they would not go quietly. On 46% shooting in the second half and great play by guard, Cody Cutsinger, Spalding continued to cut into the lead. However, in the end, Muskingum came away with the 70-64 victory.

The guards really stood out in this game as Spalding’s front three, Jamal Bacon, Dewhon Mcafee, and Cody Cutsinger combined for a total of 44 points and 14 rebounds. Cody Cutsinger led the team in scoring and rebounds with 21 and 6 respectively. Mcafee pitched in with 15 while Bacon scored 8.

Tomorrow the Golden Eagles will travel to St. Catharine, KY to take on the Patriots of St. Catharine. This will be big test for Spalding as the Patriots come into the game with a 7-1 record with their only loss coming this weekend at the hands of Georgetown College. The game will be played in St. Catharine’s gym starting at 8:00pm.
