Spalding Gets a Lopsided Win in Season Opener The Spalding University Golden Eagles made their season and home opener on Monday night when they took on Shawnee Baptist College and the game was never close. After Shawnee recorded the first bucket of the game, Spalding when on to score then next 10 and never looked back. They went on two separate 12-0 runs in the first half which led to a 53-18 halftime score. The second half started much like the first half ended with Spalding dominating on both ends of the court. With the starters extending the lead, Coach Gray was able to empty his bench early in the second half which proved to be the same outcome as they went on a 10-0 run. Sparking that run was Charles Person who dished out a couple of assists and got 2 steals along with Dominque Burdette who was able to get some points in the paint. "I got pretty much what I expected out of my players," Coach Gray commented. "I did think Dominique Burdette did a good for his first game in the program." With the Warriors of Shawnee Baptist only recording 16 points in the second half, the Golden Eagles cruised to an easy victory by the score of 92-32. The leading scorer on the night for Spalding was Phillipe Moune with 17 points while Cody Cutsinger recorded a game high 4 assists. Karlos Thompson dominated the paint with 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. The Golden Eagles will travel to Mount St. Joseph this weekend to play in their annual tournament and Coach Gray feels good about where the team is at heading into the weekend. "I feel good about where we are at this stage of the season. The kids are working hard trying to learn what we need them to do. I think they are excited about this year and feel they can put together a winning season." |
