Men’s Basketball Dominates in Conference Opener

The Spalding Men’s Basketball team finally made their way back home after a 4 game road trip in which they didn’t win a game. It was a great homecoming for the men as they took on their first conference opponent in the Principia Panthers.  The game was never close.

The first five minutes of the first half was an indication of how the rest of the night was going to go. On 7 straight points by Dewhon McAfee, the Golden Eagles soared to an early 11-2 lead and never looked back. The quick play by the front court of the Golden Eagles was too much for the Panthers to handle as they scored 18 of their 38 first half points on the fast break.  Phillippe Moune controlled the paint early in the game as he scored 6 points and led all players with 8 rebounds in the first half. The Golden Eagles led in almost every offensive category taking a 38-15 lead into halftime.

The second half saw the Principia Panthers keep pace with Spalding as the Golden Eagles were not able to lengthen their lead until very late in the half. This time it was consistent play by guard Cody Cutsinger and the surprise off the bench was Labrice Williams, a freshmen guard out of Webster County High school.

While team leaders Dewhon McAfee and Phillippe Moune once again led the team in scoring, it was play by all the guards that pushed the Golden Eagles over the top. “Of course Mcafee, Cody, and Phillippe played well,” Head Coach Kevin Gray stated, “but it was great play by Charles Pearson that stood out. He controlled our offense and the tempo of the game and allowed us to get an early lead which we were able to hold onto.”  The Golden Eagles made a surge at the end and won the game by a score of 83-45.

The win pushes the Golden Eagles record to 2-4 and 1-0 in conference. The next game will be this Saturday against Fontbonne University out of St. Louis, MO. This will be great test for the Golden Eagles as Fontbonne has won the last three conference tournament championships.

On a side note, the first poll of the season came out from the USCAA today and the Men's Basketball team currently sits 11th in the country in that poll. Also, Dewhon McAfee was named as the Honorable Mention USCAA Player of the Week for last weeks performance. McAfee poured in 62 point in two games with a 29 point effort vs. St. Catharine and a 33 point effort vs. North Park.
