Spalding Falls to MacMurray in Close Game

On Saturday, January 23, the Spalding Golden Eagles Men’s Basketball Team traveled to Illinois to play MacMurray College.  The Golden Eagles were looking to win their fourth game in a row and to move to 5-3 in conference play.  Although they gave a tremendous effort, Spalding would fall to MacMurray.

The first half was played very evenly.  The teams were able to trade baskets for most of the half.  MacMurray was able to go on an 8-0 with about six minutes left in the first half to build their lead to eleven.  Spalding would battle back and put together a 6-0 run of their own to cut the lead to five.  The Golden Eagles were able to tie the game up with 24 seconds left in the half but a late jumper by MacMurray would give them the lead at halftime.  The score at halftime was Spalding 40 and MacMurray 42.  Dewhon McAfee and Jamal Bacon were able to combine for 30 of the teams 40 first half points.

The second half was very similar to the first.  MacMurray was able to put together a 6-0 run early in the second half to build their lead to ten.  After the teams traded baskets for a few minutes, MacMurray would go on an 8-2 run and built their lead to fourteen points.  After the lead was up to fifteen, Spalding started to mount a small comeback.  Over the next 3 ½ minutes Spalding would cut the lead to five.  The Golden Eagles were able to tie the game up at 74 with just under five minutes left in the game, but MacMurray proved to be too much for Spalding to handle on the road.  Spalding was able to get a chance to tie the game with a three-pointer with just seconds left, but could not convert.  MacMurray would hold on to beat the Golden Eagles, the final score being 84-80.  Dewhon Mcafee would lead Spalding in scoring with 25 points.  Jamal Bacon scored 20 and Cody Cutsinger scored 18.  Although there were big numbers put up by Spalding, it would not be enough.

Spalding’s next game will be played on Monday, January 25, at Principia.  Their next home game will not be played until February 6, in Derek Smith Gymnasium.
