Mcafee, Thompson Record Double-Doubles ‘We have played a lot of road games, the refs have been hard on us, we are young’. These are just some of the excuses that Coach Gray could say after their recent 3 game losing streak, but he will not. “It’s simple; we just have not put it all together. When our guys figure that out, we will be a good team.” Well the team figured it out tonight as they took on Conference opponent Greenville College and came away with a victory 77-67. Both teams have found themselves in the middle of the pact in the conference standings and with a win tonight Spalding was able to climb the conference ladder chasing Westminster College who has a perfect 5-0 record. The story of the first half was Spalding point guard Dewhon Mcafee. With the team coming off of 3 straight defeats, the guard took the team on his back with an outburst of points. Mcafee, on 5-8 shooting, recorded a season high for the first half with 17 points. He was 1-2 from behind the arc as well as a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. His production did not stop there. Mcafee almost recorded a double-double in the first half as he pulled down 8 rebounds leading all players in that category going into half. The up tempo style of both teams favored Spalding as they were able to score more than half of their points in the paint while more than half of those came on transition. Early in the half Spalding went on to a 13-0 run which propelled them to a 43-34 halftime lead. Spalding came out with the same spark that they left the half with led by sophomore center Karlos Thompson. At one point Thompson scorde 4 straight baskets for the Golden Eagles to extend Spalding’s lead to 11. Thompson recorded his first double-double of the conference season with 18 points and 14rebounds. Dewhon Mcafee finished off his inevitable double-double as he finished the game with 2 points and 10 rebounds. “What can you say about those guys, they played great.” Coach Gray commented. “ Mcafee ran a great transition game which Karlos benefited from. It was great to see both guys step up in a big game when we needed them.” The Men will be back in action this Saturday as they take on Blackburn College from Carlinville, IL in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at 3:00pm in Derek Smith Gymnasium on the campus of Spalding University.
