Men Take Down Former Champs on the Road To say that this past weekend, the Spalding Men's Basketball team was walking into Fontbonne's gym as an underdog would be an understatement. Winners of the last 3 conference tournament championships, and an average record of 12-4 in conference over the last 3 seasons, Fontbonne has climbed to become the Goliath of the conference. Beating Fontbonne is a rareity, beating them in their own gym just does not happen. Well it did. Spalding took a one point lead into half on 56% shooting from the field. They were 18-32 from the field and an astounding 9-13 from 3 point range. "I told the guys at half, 'Hey we are up 1 and shot lights out, that is not going to happen again'", stated Coach Gray. "I knew we needed to defend and put some pressure on them in the second half." The second half went back and forth for a while until a mid period spurt by Fontbonne put them up 12, a familiar place for the former champions. However, the unknown team from Lousiville stormed right back to tie and with a big three pointer by Dewhon McAfee the Golden Eagles took the lead for good. Spalding's quickness and size was too much for the Griffins to handle and the Golden Eagles took the game 88-82. "It was a big win for us on the road," Gray added. "That was a good team we beat, not too many teams are going to beat them at their place, it was nice to get that one." Dewhon McAfee once again proved to be one of the top guards in the conference as he poured in 26 points on 8-16 shooting from the field. Labrice Williams and Karlos Thompson scored 15 and 12 respectively while Thompson owned the boards with 9 which led all players on the night. Spalding will be traveling to Campbellsville this Wednesday, game time is 7:30pm |
