Golden Eagles Name New Baseball Skipper

LOUISVILLE, KY (July 15, 2009) – Spalding University Athletic Director Roger Burkman announces that Mike Stawski, Assistant Head Baseball Coach at Webster University for the past three seasons, has been named the new Head Baseball Coach for the Golden Eagles. Stawski served as pitching coach those three seasons for a Webster squad that compiled a 60‐6 record in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC), winning three league titles, and amassing a 90‐44 record overall. Spalding University will become the newest member of the SLIAC starting with the 2009‐2010 academic year. The SLIAC is composed of nine colleges in Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky.

Stawski fills the void created by the departure of Rory Jackson, who is returning home to Iowa with his family. During his nine years with the baseball program, Coach Jackson led the Golden Eagles to three NAIA World Series appearances, seven KIAC Conference Championships, six KIAC Tournament Championships and two Super‐Regional Championships; he was named KIAC Coach of the Year in 2007. “It has been my dream to obtain a head coaching position at the collegiate level, and I am grateful to Spalding for this opportunity,” said Stawski.” I have fortunate to have been successful as an assistant head coach at Webster and I fully intend on building a program that both Spalding and the city of Louisville will be proud of. Not only was Spalding, with its rich history and tradition of academic excellence a draw, but the city of Louisville has plenty to offer any student‐athlete. As is illustrated by the two USCAA national championship teams in volleyball and women’s basketball, Spalding athletics is poised to succeed at a high level and I am excited to get things in high gear.”

Athletic Director Roger Burkman, entering his fourth year at the helm of the Golden Eagle athletic program, is pleased to have secured a proven coach. “Coach Stawski did a tremendous job at Webster and is clearly ready to further develop and lead our program. His knowledge and guidance will be a great asset to our program and our student‐athletes for years to come.”
