Spalding Athletics has Stellar Weekend
The weekend started off on the right foot when the Men’s Soccer team traveled to Georgetown, KY to take on the Tigers of Georgetown College and defeated them 3-2. This may have looked like your everyday matchup but after delving into it more you began to realize the importance of this game. Georgetown came into the match with an undefeated record of 3-0 while Spalding came in with a stellar 4-1 record, with their only loss coming at the ends of Bellarmine University, a Division II program.
Spalding took the early lead on the road with a goal at the 7 minute mark but the Tigers of Georgetown came roaring back with a goal 5 minutes later and another one before the end of the first half. Spalding went into halftime down 2-1 but being familiar with this position they once again refocused their efforts to put the pressure back on their opponents. Justin Robbins started the comeback for the Golden Eagles with a goal in the 50th minute; the assist went to Miloljub Damnjonovic. With momentum on their side and fresh legs, Spalding’s Jazmin Lizdo put in the game winning goal to the give Spalding the 3-2 victory and move their record to 5-1.
The Volleyball team traveled to Centre College to play in the Centre College Invitational. The opening game of the tournament was Spalding vs. the host school, Centre College. The Colonels proved to be too much as they beat Spalding in three straight matches, 21-25, 22-25, and 18-25. Leading the way for Centre was Laura Hench with 8 kills while Megan Gatewood pitched in with 10 digs.
The second game saw Spalding get back to its winning ways as they defeated Asbury College in three straight sets. The only set that was close was the first one of the match as Spalding won 25-22. The momentum carried them into set two and three as they took those easily by scores of 25-18 and 25-20. The Golden Eagles pushed their record to 9-2.
Rounding off the weekend was the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams who competed in the Berea College Invitational. Both teams faired very well against the tough competition in the meet but the Men’s team stood out with a tremendous 3rd place finish.
