Butlers’ Bates Commits to Spalding

Shontel Bates, a 5-5 guard from Butler High School, has made a commitment to attend Spalding University and join the women’s basketball program.  Bates started all 26 games this past season in helping Butler to a 19-7 record and runner up finish in the Sixth Region.  She was also a key contributor to the team’s state championship season in 2008.  She becomes Spalding’s third commitment this year, joining Janay Jones (Lewis and Clark CC) and Janie Klein (Manual).

“Shontel is an excellent athlete and a quality young lady,” commented Spalding coach Charlie Just.  “She is a solid offensive player who also works hard at the defensive end of the floor.  Her ability to put pressure on the ball defensively will be a real asset for our team.  We are delighted that she has decided to become a part of our program.”
